Senior year is all about standing on the edge of the next big chapter, and your senior photos should reflect exactly who you are in this moment. For Austin’s senior portrait session, we skipped the traditional park backdrops and headed straight for the heart of Downtown Spokane to capture an urban, high-contrast look that perfectly matched his style.
Downtown Spokane is a goldmine for photographers if you know where to look. Between the historic textures of weathered brick, the harsh architectural lines, and the way the sun cuts through the city structures, it provides the perfect stage for a modern, effortless senior session.
Texture, Mood, and Classic Alleyways
We started the session utilizing the raw, industrial textures of the city’s classic alleyways. Austin brought an effortless, grounded energy to the camera. Leaning against the aged brick walls, his dark apparel created a striking, moody contrast against the warm, sun-lit urban backdrop. These shots were all about capturing a relaxed, confident vibe—no forced smiles, just an authentic look at a senior ready to take on the world.
Chasing the Golden Hour Light
As the afternoon went on, we shifted locations to play with the architecture and the changing light. One of the highlights of the session was capturing Austin framed by the city's underpasses and street elements. The bold graphic lines of the traffic signs combined with the sun glowing right behind him created an incredibly sharp, deliberate look.
The lighting during the latter half of our shoot gave us an incredible opportunity to work with dramatic rim lighting. The sun hitting the back of his hair while keeping the focus entirely on his expression made for some of the most compelling close-up portraits of the day.
Layering the Style
Austin swapped into a vibrant blue graphic thermal layer that absolutely popped against both the cool concrete structures and the warm, classic red brick walls we found later in the evening. Whether he was leaning over a metal railing or looking directly into the lens, his style paired perfectly with Spokane's downtown character.
